Pompeii 2009

We had to take a bus the next day to drive us to Pompeii, the ancient city of Rome that was ruined by a long catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius for 2 days at the scale of 79D.

I have always loved the subject of history and culture, I found these chunks of rocks fascinating even though some might be bored of it. Browsing these ruined constructions brought up my imagination of how the ancient Roman citizens lived their life in that era.

and here are the things I saw...

Pompeii 2009/10/20

Mt Vesuvius in the background

This place was padlocked o(´^`)o

The Marcellum which is the marketplace

The Forum of Pompeii

it was the economic, religious and political center of Pompeii

Temple of Jupiter (picture below : far right are the marcellum buildings) it was a temple dedicated to Juno, Minerva, and Jupiter. It has twelve Corinthian columns, three on each side and six in the front.

all these ruined pillars...

The Temple of Apollo. There were several different deities in the temple: Apollo, Diana the Huntress, and possibly Mercury. The cellar is on a high platform and was the most sacred part of the temple.

The road leading from the forum to the northern walls of the city has two arches. The arch that faces to the main road of the city is called Road of Fortuna, dedicated to Caligola, and the arch to the right of the temple of Jupiter was to honor Nero Caesar.

Items that were rescued. On the right was the real dead body of a kid victim squatting while trying to cover his nose.

more of the dead bodies of the victims (/。\)

these bodies were pretty small in size, smaller than me

Thermal baths which is the city's public baths, Frigidarium in the picture which is also a pool

Openings on the roof that allow lights to enter

Caldarium

Details on the wall of the bath \(○^ω^○)/ .The hollow walls form sturdy flues filled in with heated air.

The rail on the floor indicates that this ancient shop utilized a sliding door.

The ancient stove where they prepared culinary equivalent to fast food today. I wonder how does this thing work...?

One of the rich people's house, cause there was a pool in it.

The Lupanare which is the brothel in the red district area. The Brothel has ten beds. There were two entrances and five rooms at the ground-level floor, each with a bed built next to the wall.

Erotic paintings in the brothel. Prostitution was legal at that time.
